Twist of Fate

Set in 1970s Los Angeles,

Twist of Fate dramatizes a real-life First Amendment legal battle. Dominique St. Marie, a Romani fortune teller, is arrested by a Mexican police detective because fortune-telling is illegal in California. Her teenage daughter Olivia, embarrassed by her mother’s heritage, reluctantly navigates this scandal. Dominique’s case is taken pro bono by Michael Boardman, a Jewish ACLU attorney intrigued by her vibrant strength. As Dominique and Boardman build a defense based on free speech, the story delves into themes of cultural identity, legality, and the nature of prophecy—juxtaposing fortune-tellers, pollsters, and religious preachers. All of Dominique’s predictions are eerily accurate, culminating in a poignant court showdown that blends romance, justice, and identity.
